DAY 7 Copenhagen to Odense to Aarhus to Hirtshals (Cruise Port)

Marvel at the beauty of the Danish countryside today as we journey towards the coastal town of Hirtshals. The first stop in our incredible itinerary is the birthplace of prolific fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Anderson; it’s hardly surprising that Odense is somewhat reminiscent of a storybook village. An enchanting old world ambiance flourishes here, with colourful houses and quaint architecture lining the cobbled stone streets. Named after Odin, King of the Nordic Gods, the city is bejewelled with museums, galleries, cafes and bars, while pedestrian crossing lights feature Andersen in silhouette. Learn more about the history of the town and its most famous inhabitant on a guided tour and enjoy free time to discover the inspiration for his famous fairytales.

Next, we travel to Aarhus - a beguiling city that packs a lot in. Its small size and quaint half-timbered enclaves gives it a cosy and intimate atmosphere, yet as we set off on our guided tour, we also discover its modern and active vibe with a booming cultural scene. Full of cobblestone streets, Møllestien is an exceedingly charming example, lined with boldly coloured buildings – like a picture-perfect postcard. Also home to Den Gamle By, a large open-air museum with typical historic town buildings from the 1600s to the mid-1800s featuring buildings ranging from poorhouses to noble town palaces. The list of attractions in Aarhus is endless including contemporary artwork and buildings, Viking museums and more. From the sandy beaches of the coast, the manicured rose gardens of Marselisborg Castle to the dense green of the woods, Aarhus is a photo opportunity at every turn.

We continue our journey to Hirtshals. With its grand lighthouse standing watch over the Jutland peninsula’s busy shipping fairways from atop its grassy vantage point; Hirtshals, once a charming fishing village overlooking Vendsyssel's peaceful dune landscapes, is now a major maritime hub. Wooden fishing boats bob in the picturesque harbour where we board our ship for a leisurely overnight cruise to Bergen - Norway. Our cruise arrives around lunchtime tomorrow so there is plenty of time to relax onboard and take in the glorious views of Norway’s coastline.

DAY 8 Cruise Arrives in Bergen (Norway)

An epic expanse of vast unspoiled wilderness, Norway is one of the most beautiful countries on earth; its snowcapped mountains, glorious glaciers and lush evergreen forests transected by majestic coastal fjords. These awe-inspiring natural landscapes serve as a mystical backdrop for the country’s colour filled riverside settlements, old Viking villages, cosmopolitan cityscapes and glowing northern lights.

We arrive into the resplendent city of Bergen and enjoy an enchanting driving tour of this historic trading empire and heart of the fjords. The World Heritage listed town of Bergen, is set against a backdrop of majestic snowcapped mountains on Norway’s southwest coast. The ideal balance of culture, nature and urban living and the gateway to the Fjords. The harbour, dotted with colourful wooden buildings has been the heart of the city for hundreds of years and the residents are proud of their strong cultural identity. The charm of the town, blue glaciers and powerful waterfalls is just the start of what Bergen has to offer and with a history going back to the 1300’s, it isn’t just the scenery that draws people in.

DAY 9 Explore Bergen

Choose how you’d like to experience the beautiful Norwegian city of Bergen today with a selection of activities on offer. There is plenty to experience - from world-class gastronomy to cosy coffee shops, historic sights to cool art museums. Perhaps start with a gentle stroll through the cobbled narrow alleyways which lie between the slim, iconic buildings – you will reveal a hidden world of textile and crafters’ shops, artists’ galleries and jewellers’ workshops, just waiting for you to unveil their treasures.

Maybe enjoy a trip on the Fløibanen, the Bergen funicular railway, which will raise you one thousand staggering feet up Fløyen mountain. From the magnificent viewing platform on the top of Fløyen, you can marvel at spectacular views of Bergen, the surrounding fjord and mountain landscape - a dreamlike panorama. Complete your experience with a drink at the Magic Ice Bar, a unique winter wonderland with stunning ice sculptures.

Perhaps get to know Grieg at the Troldhaugen Museum – the former home of renowned Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg – see his Steinway piano, composer’s cabin and the Concert Hall. Taste Bergen’s past at the Fish Market with its extraordinary array of produce from fresh fish to local farm food. Head back in time at the Old Bergen Museum for a glimpse of what life was like here in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries – featuring its exquisite architectural diversity. Maybe see amazing art at the KODE Museum including masterpieces by the likes of Edvard Munch, Nikolai Astrup and Pablo Picasso.

Find the Bergenhus fortress dominating the entrance of the harbour since the 16th century - one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fortifications with a military history dating back to the early 1500s. Perhaps take a trip to Lysøen to see the 17th century villa once belonging to Norwegian violin-virtuoso and composer Ole Bull; reminiscent of a fairy tale kingdom complete with romantic paths, ponds and gazebos.

You could discover Norways Viking roots at Fantoft Stave Church; a magnificent church originally built in Fortun in Sogn in 1150. The charming structure you see today was rebuilt after fire to appear exactly as it was before and features the original crucifix which survived the blaze. DAY 10 Bergen to Fjords (Gudvangen) to Flam to Borgund to Oslo

Today we experience Norway’s epic fjords. We discover the scenic heartland, lush forests and staggering mountains enroute to Gudvangen, a village located at the end of Nærøyfjord, arguably Norway’s most famous fjord. Enjoy free time in mystical Gudvangen which translates to “field of gods by the water”, an ancient Viking village nestled on the riverbank where the Nærøydalselvi river flows into the immense fjord. Towering cliff faces, snowcapped mountains and majestic tumbling waterfalls surround this tiny township, where riverside caves and medieval stave churches punctuate the lush wilderness and fierce trolls and dragons, carved by long-passed Viking craftsman adorn ornate entranceways.

Perhaps take the optional Fjords cruise along the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjorden fjords to Flann (including visiting an historic Viking village). This incredibly scenic cruise is highly recommended. Glassy blue water is framed by towering cliffs and dramatic waterfalls - making for a truly extraordinary spectacle.

Characterised by a dramatic landscape of steep mountains, magnificent waterfalls and narrow valleys. The town of Flåm is breath-takingly beautiful, with snow-capped mountains, soaring above jewel tones of the blue and teal water below. The village is reminiscent of a simpler time, with beautiful and colourful wooden buildings as well as farms clinging to the side of the mountains. The Stegastein Veiwpoint, 650m above Aurlandsfjord offers uninterrupted panoramic views of this unforgettable region.

We pause our journey in the humble village of Borgund which is the site of one of the best known and most well-preserved stave churches in all of Norway. The end of the Viking age with its pagan Norse gods also marked the coming of Christianity to Norway. The 12th century saw the medieval Norwegian Vikings subdued - taking their boat-building skills to building fine wooden churches. This exceptional masterpiece with its soaring bell tower, lavishly carved portals and intricate dragon’s head carvings is a sight to behold.

We continue on with our travels to the beautiful city of Oslo surrounded by lush mountains and peaceful seas, where we arrive in the late evening and enjoy a delicious dinner.

DAY 11 Oslo to Karlstad (Sweden)

Architecturally striking, Oslo is a city of modern innovation and immense natural beauty with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world. Natural spaces infuse the metropolis, with subways reaching to forests, lakes and ski slopes. Renowned museums, stylish galleries and a trendy culinary scene expand out from the city’s Neoclassical heart, where lively bars and cafes line the central squares. Today will be a cultural feast. We join a special walking tour of Oslo with a local guide to gain deeper insight into the city, learn about local traditions and see highlights including the Oslo Opera House, Akershus Castle, Kvadraturen, the Parliament building and the Royal Palace.

We then enjoy free time here to experience Oslo’s legendary life-style, remarkable Viking spirit and beautiful natural environment. This cosmopolitan city showcases the Scandinavian flair for design - food is a cultural passion where Norwegians push the boundaries of innovation (check out the neighbourhood coffee scene and fabulous fusion cuisine). Oslo is also renowned for its green spaces and museums - visit the Viking Ship Museum (with 9th century Viking ships), Ski Museum (with ski-jumping hill and panoramic views of Oslofjord), the Royal Palace, the view from the ancient fortress of Akershus (12th century), stroll through a sculpture park with 212 works, experience the modern art of Scream by Munch or the waterside Norwegian Maritime Museum. There is so much more to see and do like: the National Gallery, Resistance Museum (WWII), Bygdøy Peninsula, Frogner Park, Vigeland Museum, Norwegian Folk Museum, Oslo Opera House (climb the futuristic roof), Kon-Tiki Museum, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art and the Botanical Garden. Later this afternoon, we continue onwards to Sweden; snow-capped peaks, moose dense forests, crystal clear lakes, northern lights and the midnight sun are synonymous with this alluring country. Walled medieval cities, seaside fortresses, turreted palaces, revealing museums and the indigenous Sami people of the north attest to Sweden's long and complex history whilst the Swedes’ liberal and open attitude to virtually every aspect of life is certainly one of their most enviable qualities.

Our first Swedish destination is Karlstad, sitting proudly on the shores of the largest lake in Western Europe, Karlstad will most definitely please the senses. An elegant tree lined city which abounds in wide thoroughfares, large open squares and lush parkland; the result of the city’s reimagining after a catastrophic fire in 1865 destroyed all but 7 of the town’s buildings. In the city centre, the magnificent Karlstad Cathedral showcasing an elaborate chandelier with model ships hanging from its ceiling is a sight to behold.

The city is yours tonight to discover the local traditional fare - Karlstad has been roasting its own coffee since 1906 and being Sweden, it must be accompanied by something sweet – perhaps take time to pause for a Karlstad coffee complemented by an authentic cardamom roll – maybe even pick up a few extra treats for your journey tomorrow.

DAY 12 Karlstad to Sigtuna to Stockholm

Today we explore more of irresistible Sweden and travel back to a bygone era - our first stop is Sigtuna, Sweden’s oldest town and first capital. Founded by King Erik the Victorious in 970 AD, this picturesque time-warped village is home to magnificent stone church remains including that of Sweden's very first cathedral. Today the main street, thought to be the oldest in the country is lined with cafes and traditional pastel painted wooden buildings likely to distract you from your stroll, while a historic Dominican friars' abbey plays host to weekly summertime concerts. Enjoy a guided tour of this historic town and free time to discover its wonders on your own. Perhaps uncover the cafes offering a range of Swedish delights for your lunch today.

We then continue our discovery of Scandinavia as we travel to Stockholm - Sweden’s dynamic capital city. Stockholm is beauty on water, with impeccably preserved historic centres, but it is no museum piece: it's modern, dynamic and ever evolving. The most enchanting and oldest district of Gamla Stan is right out of a storybook, with a grand royal palace, gabled buildings and razor-thin cobblestone streets. World-class museums and galleries inform and provoke, harbouring everything from glittering Viking treasures to ABBA props and subversive contemporary art. DAY 13 Explore Stockholm

Choose how you’d like to experience this spectacular city with a selection of activities on offer. Stockholm is set amongst a network of 24,000 islands that make up the Stockholm Archipelago. Despite the geography of the islands, the city and its attractions are all easily accessible. Stockholm is known to have the highest air and water quality of any European capital, and has emerged as a major tech hub, second only to Silicon Valley. There are three world heritage listed sites recognised by UNESCO, in the Stockholm region Birka (an old Viking outpost and archaeological site), Drottningholm Palace (home to the Royal family since 1662) and The Woodland Cemetery. There is so much to see and do in this iconic Scandinavian city. DAY 14 Lidingö Island to Overnight Cruise to Helsinki (Finland)

We continue our Swedish adventure to Lidingö Island and enjoy free time to explore the stunning surrounds. A well-to-do commuter island in the sheltered inner archipelago of Stockholm, Lidingo Island is renowned for its opulent homes and villas and its impressive collection of striking sculptures by one of Sweden’s greatest sculptors, Cark Milles. Large swathes of the island are covered in lush, untouched natural woodlands while the coastline is dotted with quaint rural farm shops, elegant eateries and even a chocolate factory and coffee roasting-house just waiting for you to call in.

Our next stop is the port where we board our overnight cruise through the Baltic Sea to Helsinki, Finland. Enjoy the onboard entertainment plus an optional buffet dinner tonight, including authentic Scandinavian treats.

DAY 15 Explore Helsinki

This morning you awake in Finland. One of the world’s most northern and geographically remote countries where the thrill of witnessing the Aurora Borealis is possible on roughly 200 nights a year, Finland is a symbolic northern border between western and eastern Europe. Nearly two thirds of Finland is blanketed in thick woodlands and lakes offering some of the cleanest air in the world, whilst its cities are laid back yet refreshingly active particularly during the short sunny season.

The capital Helsinki is a vibrant seaside city entwined with sublime Baltic bays and islands. It’s boulevards and backstreets overflow with magnificent architecture, intriguing drinking and dining venues and groundbreaking design. We enjoy a driving tour of the city’s celebrated sights and attractions.

Compact in size, Helsinki is a landscape of striking natural beauty, mixed with Art Nouveau architecture and seaside charm. Finland is officially the happiest nation on earth; Helsinki has a laidback atmosphere and active way of life, despite the frosty temperatures. Helsinki is an archipelago, consisting of 330 islands and a third of the city is covered in green areas, including vast inner-city parks, lakes and pine forests. While nature is a prominent attraction, Helsinki is alive with restaurants, entertainment and architectural history.

We experience a special driving and walking tour with our expert local guide. Encounter some of the city's most renowned sights including the Havis Amanda - the famous art nouveau fountain symbolising the birth of the city of Helsinki. Admire Senate Square, Helsinki Cathedral - Finland's most photographed building, Uspenski Cathedral illustrating Russia’s century-long engagement with Finland and the largest orthodox church in Western Europe. We finish with a stroll through Kauppatori Market - the ideal place to purchase some keepsakes and remarkable Finnish crafts.

DAY 16 Explore Helsinki

Today is yours to explore fascinating Helsinki as you wish. This quirky capital is a hub for design, culture and architectural innovation, not to mention the delicious cuisine to be found here. Helsinki is surrounded by enthralling sites - discover the Suomenlinna walking trails and museum. Seek out one of the many saunas around town, visit the Seurasaari open-air museum featuring displays of life and work in rural Finland over the last 400 years, or take in some modern art at the Kiasma Contemporary.

Admire the Temppeliaukio Church with its award-winning unique design. Perhaps experience the thrill of Linnanmäki amusement park - where all the major rides are the highest and fastest in the country. Stroll the Esplanadi, a refreshing green space right in the middle of the city, see the Old Market Hall - a striking byzantine revival building where you’ll be tempted by all sorts of stalls including some featuring delectable Finnish cakes and cheeses.

Explore the wooden house districts – neighbourhoods originally built for Helsinki’s working class - now the pretty painted timber houses are homes for Helsinki’s bohemian and creative types. Some areas have coffee shops and trendy bars and others are loved for their green space. This suburb was intended as a Garden City and the vegetable plots allocated for workers are now urban farms.
