DAY 10 Explore Isafjordur (Iceland)

Iceland is an epic symphony of natural splendour. Here you can witness the majesty of Europe’s largest glacier, take a front row seat to the Northern Lights or sip on Brennivín in the midnight sun. One of the most volcanically active landscapes on the planet, where natural hot springs steam, geysers gush and glistening glaciers and vast ash deserts will take your breath away. This ‘fire and ice’ Nordic nation is astonishingly unique.

Today we explore Iceland’s remote West Fjords and cruise into magnificent Skutulsfjörður fjord to visit Isafjordur. It’s hard to imagine a much more dramatic location; built on the L-shaped spit, which stretches out into the narrow icy waters of the fjord. Here you can discover huge waterfalls, spectacular mountain scenery or explore the township.

Ísafjörður is surrounded by steep mountains and blessed with wildlife and scenery that is simply breathtaking. Maybe experience waterfalls cascading down majestic mountains, stand beneath the awesome power of ancient glaciers and within the fields once traversed by Vikings. One of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls and some of the most stunning landscapes are found at Dynjandi waterfall. See puffins and even a red and gold sand beach that has to be seen to be believed. Maybe relish the opportunity to learn about avalanches, arctic foxes and the vibrant food and culture of the traditional fishing village of Suðureyri. Perhaps glide across the pristine glassy waters of an Icelandic fjord on a kayak or cruise across the harbour to behold the incredible grandeur of the resident whales.

Maybe explore this quaint yet cosmopolitan township, spectacularly surrounded by astounding natural beauty and enveloped by lush mountain peaks. This historic settlement is a charming web of old tin-clad and timber buildings, many unchanged from their heyday in the 18th and 19th century when tall ships and Norwegian whaling crews filled the harbour. Located in the sparsely populated region of northwest Iceland and built around a thriving fishing industry Ísafjörður is a small town of ancient origins where history and legend unite. Perhaps discover the oldest standing Icelandic house, built in 1743 or visit Ósvör, once a fisherman’s village and now an open-air museum. Maybe investigate the legend of the “troll’s seat” – a large depression shaped like a half moon in the flat mountains that surround the Isafjordur fjord.

Perhaps experience the healing warm waters and otherworldly atmosphere of the famed Blue Lagoon. The beautiful milky-blue water of this subterranean natural spa is unlike anything else found on earth and starkly contrasts with the surrounding black lava fields and creeping gray moss. The temperature of the Blue Lagoon is a consistent 39 C year-round, making it the perfect bathing temperature.

Immerse yourself in Iceland’s dramatic landscapes carved by the forces of nature and time, to experience the huge volcanos, giant glaciers and ice caps. You can make your way through fumaroles, hot springs, and steam vents enroute to one of Iceland’s tempestuous volcanos. Marvel at multi-coloured pools of boiling mud, uncover the secrets of daring Viking history, be swept away by the magic of Langjökull Glacier and walk through a man-made ice cave. Alesund is home to one of the most beautiful fjords in the world, Hjørundfjord - etched deep into the Sunnmøre Alps. This charm filled port town flaunts an astounding legacy of art nouveau architecture with whimsical folkloric and Viking flourishes.

Perhaps join an exhilarating Hjørundfjord fjord cruise to absorb the breathtaking views of the majestic mountains which rise from the fjord to heights of more than 1500m. To be immersed in such a dramatic landscape will truly stir your soul.

Alesund is nestled atop a peninsula between two bright blue fjords. Today you will find yourself plunged into the intriguing fairytale atmosphere of Alesund – where winding streets are painted with pastel coloured facades and topped with turrets, spires, gables and dragon heads as the smell of fresh seafood fills the air. Maybe take a walk to reach the Sukkertoppen, the “sugar peak” where you can ascend the mountain via a narrow trail during a spectacular 1 hour hike. DAY 16 Cruise Sognefjord & Explore Flåm

Cruise through a fjord wonderland today as we sail down one of Norway’s most renowned waterways through Sognefjord, then to the end of Aurlandsfjorden to Flåm, with its famous steep mountain railway.

Characterised by a dramatic landscape of steep mountains, magnificent waterfalls and narrow valleys. The town of Flåm, nestled in the south west of Norway is breathtakingly beautiful, with snow-capped mountains soaring above jewel tones of the blue and teal water below. The village is reminiscent of a simpler time, with beautiful and colourful wooden buildings as well as farms clinging to the side of the mountains. The Stegastein Viewpoint, 650m above Aurlandsfjord offers uninterrupted panoramic views of this unforgettable region.

Perhaps board the renowned mountain railway and take the unforgettable journey from Voss on lake Vangsvatnet through astonishing landscapes to Myrdal mountain and into the magnificent Flam Valley. Admire breathtaking backdrops as your train continues from Flåm to the spectacular Kjosfossen waterfall plunging from dizzying heights (and powering the train) - whilst being surrounded by a plethora of natural treasures revealing Norway’s unique wild and rugged scenery - and here and there, admire picture-book mountain farms, perched like mountain climbers raising cattle and producing exquisite Norwegian cheese.
