From the great cities of Berlin and Hamburg to the epic scenery and the fairytale villages, Germany’s countryside is speckled with Baroque palaces, mountaintop castles, centuries-old biergarten and half-timbered medieval towns. This is a country where historic monuments and wartime relics sit beside underground clubs and ultra-modern galleries, complemented by hearty German fare and famous frothy beer.

DAY 8 Explore Orkney Islands (Kirkwall, Scotland)

There’s a magic to the Scottish Orkney Islands that you begin to feel as soon as you step ashore. With its beautiful otherworldly landscapes, ancient standing stones and prehistoric villages, the Orkney Islands are magnificently unique and fiercely independent. The archipelago’s bustling main port town of Kirkwall dates back to the 11th century, its strong Viking heritage is still felt today amidst its narrow, twisting wynds and atmospheric paved streets - lined with everything from cathedrals to whiskey breweries. For an Orcadian, the Mainland means the largest island in Orkney rather than the rest of Scotland, and their history is inextricably linked with Scandinavia.

An Ancient Norse town, Kirkwall is the largest town in the Orkneys. Divided into two main focal points: the old harbour and the flagstoned main street - which changes its name four times as it twists its way from the harbour past the world-renowned cathedral. Kirkwall’s red sandstone cathedral commenced being built in 1137 and is without a doubt the finest medieval building in the north of Scotland - standing at the very heart of Kirkwall, St Magnus Cathedral is the town’s most compelling sight. To the south of the cathedral are the remains of the Bishop’s Palace, residence of the Bishop of Orkney since the twelfth century.

Iceland is an epic symphony of natural splendour. Here you can witness the majesty of Europe’s largest glacier, take a front row seat to the Northern Lights or sip on Brennivín in the midnight sun. One of the most volcanically active landscapes on the planet, where natural hot springs steam, geysers gush and glistening glaciers and vast ash deserts will take your breath away. This ‘fire and ice’ Nordic nation is astonishingly unique.

Perhaps experience the healing warm waters and otherworldly atmosphere of the famed Blue Lagoon. The beautiful milky-blue water of this subterranean natural spa is unlike anything else found on earth and starkly contrasts with the surrounding black lava fields and creeping gray moss. DAY 15 Nuuk (Greenland)

Welcome to Greenland. Whether bathed in ethereal midnight sun or basking in the otherworldly glow of the aurora borealis, this land is something magical; an icy frontier where dogsleds glide across the snowfields and the raw power of nature astounds. Largely covered by the world’s second-largest icefield, vast ribbons of pristine, unbridled wilderness abound – magnificent mountainscapes and mesmerising fjords, punctuated with colourful fishing villages and icebergs the size of apartment buildings. Today - cruise the fjords, visit an ancient Greenlandic village, taste the local unique flavours and distinct cuisine or hike through spectacular wilderness.

Nuuk is one of the world’s smallest capital cities - where small-town ambiance is united with some of the finest cultural offerings in the Arctic. A thriving music and art scene, boutique fashion and gourmet eateries are complemented by crisp fresh air, pristine wilderness and a peak hour that lasts just 15 minutes. The waterfront and slopes of snow-capped mountains are dotted with brightly painted houses as humpback whales breach the crystal clear waters of the fjord. First inhabited by the Vikings, followed by the Eskimo (Inuit) and the Danes: Nuuk was officially founded in 1728 with the name Godthåb: “Good Hope.” Surrounded by wild, unspoiled nature and enchantingly beautiful places to see – your day is sure to be filled with unforgettable Arctic pleasures.

Perhaps visit the ancient village of Qornok and take an unforgettable walk along the fjord to admire the pristine icebergs and delightful old houses. Built between 1848 and 1849, this building is the seat of the Bishop of Greenland. Perhaps discover the Katuaq, Nuuk’s cultural centre - admire this exceptional building clad in golden larch wood on both the inside and outside – an architectural jewel used for concerts, exhibitions, conferences and as a cinema. The corrugated wall of the facade is inspired by the sinuous curves of the aurora borealis.

Greenland’s cuisine has conventionally been designed as a means of survival - traditional diets of reindeer, fish, muskox, seal and controversially whale were vital for existence in this harsh environment. Seal has been a staple of Eskimo (Inuit) cooking for thousands of years – perhaps try the national dish of Greenland ‘Suaasat’ – a thick broth often made of seal meat with barley and onions, or maybe try Seal grilled – the musty flavour may take some getting used to. DAY 16-17 Explore Ilulissat (Arctic Circle)

We are overnight in the extraordinary polar region of Ilulissat in the Arctic Circle, complete with gigantic icebergs, midnight sun and sled-dogs. Discover the epic wild polar nature, glaciers, icebergs, the world heritage protected Kangia Fjord and maybe spot a wild polar bear.

Overlooking the jaw dropping magnificence that is the Ilulissat Icefjord, the vibrant modern town of Illulisat adorns the shore of Disko Bay in a series of brightly coloured houses - but even its cheerful, snow-covered streetscapes and superb gastronomy scene are outshone by the spectacular natural spectacle on its doorstep. Astonishing in scale, icebergs the size of apartment blocks shed by the gargantuan Sermeq Kujalleq glacier fill the bay, mesmerising visitors and creating a truly epic natural panorama. Meet the proud Eskimo people and learn about their unique Inuit culture.

Ilulissat means “iceberg” in Greenlandic and truly lives up to its name boasting the largest glacier in the world outside of Antarctica. Close your eyes for a moment and listen in silence to the noises and echo of the ice as it transforms and moves; a genuine immersion into a truly magical and expressive atmosphere. Perhaps spend a day surrounded by nature while exploring the hills or follow in the footsteps of early civilizations among the remains of ancient villages. Maybe visit the local dog sled centre to meet the Greenlandic Sled Dogs – see the different sledding equipment used for fishing and hunting by dog sledge, watch the dogs being fed their staple food of kibble, meat and fish and listen to the exhilarating stories of dog sledge trips through Northwest Greenland.

DAY 19 Explore Qaqortoq (Greenland)

Walk in the footsteps of ancient Eskimo culture, submerge yourself into hot springs amongst dramatic surroundings, hike through spectacular panoramas or unveil ancient treasures as you breathe in the pure air and stunning natural landscapes of Qaqortoq – the choice is yours.

Set within a spectacular fjord system, surrounded by world heritage listed Viking historical sites, mammoth glaciers and steaming hot springs, the quaint village of Qaqortoq tumbles over a lush hillside in a pleasant jumble of colourfully painted wooden houses trickling down towards a sparkling sheltered harbour. Its charming historic town is home to a collection of 18th-century colonial buildings as well as the oldest fountain in Greenland, depicting whales spouting water from their blowholes.

The largest town in southern Greenland – Qaqortoq means "white", although in the summer this enchanting landscape is filled with colourful wildflowers. Admire breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains and deep blue sea, the icebergs in the bay and the beautiful Tasersuag lake. Maybe embark on a guided walk around the glassine waters of the dramatic great lake – an exceptional opportunity to admire the beauty of Greenlandic nature – take in the spectacular wildflowers and indigenous flora and fauna and bask in the quiet beauty of the windswept Arctic landscapes.

Perhaps board a boat for a spectacular journey to the Uunartoq Hot Springs located on an uninhabited island nearby. Float beneath towering rocky mountains with enormous icebergs of blue-white hues drifting through crystal water teeming with sea life. Minke and humpback whales may be seen breaching in the icy seas - also home to walruses and seals. Indulge in Greenland's only swimmable hot springs at a consistent 37 to 39 degrees encircled by remarkable views of the mountains and iceberg-strewn fjords.

Maybe visit the fascinating museum in Qaqortoq - housed within a yellow stone building - originally a blacksmith’s workshop dating back to 1804. Uncover old Eskimo (Inuit) boats, hunting equipment, traditional clothing and Nordic artefacts. Marvel at the exceptional exhibitions of the Dorset, Thule and the Norse cultures. DAY 22 Explore Isofjordur (Iceland)

Today we explore Iceland’s remote West Fjords and cruise into magnificent Skutulsfjörður fjord to visit Isafjordur. It’s hard to imagine a much more dramatic location; built on the L-shaped spit, which stretches out into the narrow icy waters of the fjord. Here you can discover huge waterfalls, spectacular mountain scenery or explore the township.

Ísafjörður is surrounded by steep mountains and blessed with wildlife and scenery that is simply breathtaking. Maybe experience waterfalls cascade down majestic mountains, stand beneath the awesome power of ancient glaciers and within the fields once traversed by Vikings. One of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls and some of the most stunning landscapes are found at Dynjandi waterfall. See puffins and even a red and gold sand beach that has to be seen to be believed. Maybe relish the opportunity to learn about avalanches, arctic foxes and the vibrant food and culture of the traditional fishing village of Suðureyri. Perhaps glide across the pristine glassy waters of an Icelandic fjord on a kayak or cruise across the harbour to behold the incredible grandeur of the resident whales.

Maybe explore this quaint yet cosmopolitan township, spectacularly surrounded by astounding natural beauty and enveloped by lush mountain peaks. This historic settlement is a charming web of old tin-clad and timber buildings, many unchanged from their heyday in the 18th and 19th century when tall ships and Norwegian whaling crews filled the harbour. Located in the sparsely populated region of northwest Iceland and built around a thriving fishing industry Ísafjörður is a small town of ancient origins where history and legend unite. Perhaps discover the oldest standing Icelandic house, built in 1743 or visit Ósvör, once a fisherman’s village and now an open-air museum. Maybe investigate the legend of the “troll’s seat” – a large depression shaped like a half moon in the flat mountains that surround the Isafjordur fjord.

Maybe release the secrets of an earlier time on Vigur Island and admire the resident sea lions who feed on marine birds such as the puffin, the black guillemot, the aggressive arctic tern and the common eider - or witness the past re-emerging in the historic town of Nedstikaupstadur, where in the mid-15th century Icelandic and Norwegian merchants first, and then British and German would meet in the bay of Isafiord.

DAY 23 Explore Akureyri (Iceland)

Today experience the northern Eyjafjörður Fjord and the small city of Akureyri, the spectacular gateway to nearby Lake Mývatn, Húsavík and the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park.

Step ashore today into the land of legend. Perhaps start your day of exploration at the breathtakingly spectacular “Waterfall of the Gods”. According to folklore, in the year 1,000, Law-speaker of the Althing made the decision that the nation of Iceland would convert to Christianity. He ceremoniously disposed of Norse pagan idols (Thor, Odin and Freyr) into the falls – which angered the Gods and split the falls in two.

Maybe discover the natural wonders of this dazzling land in the Lake Myvatn region – be enchanted by the incredible variety of colours, varying from the bright green meadows to the red minerals erupting from the depths of the island. Reveal the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðir, generated by underground vapours produced by an eruption 2500 years ago. Explore Dimmuborgir, an incredible labyrinth of lava, where amidst peculiar formations rises the Kirkjan, reminiscent of a Gothic Church with two pointed-arch portals and, inside, real chapels with altars. Complete your extraordinary day at the Viti crater, known also as the Inferno, one of the many mouths of the central Krafla volcano and perhaps enjoy a warm soak in its pristine internal lake.

Perhaps explore Akureyri – Iceland’s “capital of the north”. Just 60km shy of the Arctic Circle, this small city is nestled amidst dreamy snowcapped peaks at the head of Iceland’s longest fjord. With a surprisingly mild climate, cool cafes, quality restaurants and modern art galleries adorn this charming town; geothermal swimming pools, historic 19th century wooden houses and the twin spires of a modern Lutheran church adding depth to the build landscape, beyond which volcanic natural glory abounds. Being this close to the North Pole – thoughts of Santa will surely have crossed your mind – so maybe take the opportunity while you can to visit Santa Clause’s house, a delightful Christmas toy shop, with the largest Advent calendar in the world.
