Great Southern Train – Summer Each Year

The new Great Southern train has become as iconic as its sister train journeys The Ghan and Indian Pacific, but only operates during summer each year. Enjoy the same private cabins, dining experiences and friendly crew aboard this completely new rail journey, that uses the same rollingstock as the long-established and popular Indian Pacific and The Ghan. Experience the same hallmark quality of off-train activities and escorted touring across these new spectacular locations. The Great Southern Journey is different in each direction.

You have the option to take the Great Southern in either direction:

Adelaide to Brisbane (2 nights, 3 days) - Thursday departures

The Adelaide-Brisbane journey includes touring in The Grampians, Canberra and a special beachside dining experience on the Northern NSW Coast.

The Grampians

Explore one of Australia’s most stunning wilderness regions, boasting sandstone mountains, wildflowers, waterfalls and native fauna such as echidnas and wallabies. Enjoy a guided coach tour through the scenic town of Halls Gap, or embrace Mother Nature and stretch your legs with a guided walk to the Venus Baths. Alternatively, spend the afternoon tasting regional wines at Pomonal Estate or Fallen Giants, where you’ll taste and learn about the winery’s history.

Canberra

There’s more than just politics in our nation’s capital. While the jewel in Canberra’s crown is Parliament House, it is also home to landmarks such as the National Portrait Gallery, Australian War Memorial and the National Arboretum. There are plenty of opportunities to delve into this city’s art, history and culinary culture with the included optional excursions.

Coffs Harbour

Discover the coastal charm of Coffs Harbour, where golden beaches, lush hinterlands, and the iconic Big Banana create the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation on the stunning New South Wales coast. Touring options include a visit to Sealy Lookout and North Coast Regional Botanical Garden or the boutique Sunday Markets, the historic jetty and local music. Alternatively, take a stroll from the Urunga Boardwalk to the Beach with a local Indigenous guide, or treat yourself to an optional upgrade with a hinterland helicopter flight that soars over the Great Dividing Range and Coffs Harbour coastline.

Australia's third-largest city is well known for its green leafy parks, urban inner-city villages, bustling streets, interesting laneways, art galleries, museums and South Bank with its lush riverside gardens, markets, and massive lagoon.

Today we tour this energetic city’s main attractions, gaining a deep appreciation of Brisbane's rich history, spectacular architecture and beautiful waterways.

Your friendly driver will pick you up in the comfortable air-conditioned coach before sharing experiences, fascinating facts and enchanting stories in the onboard full commentary throughout the day. DAY 7 Australia Zoo & Sunshine Coast

CRIKEY! Australia Zoo is one of the best wildlife conservation facilities in the world nestled on the Sunshine Coast. Made famous by Steve, Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin in their global documentaries, the sheer amount and variety of mammals, reptiles, birds and attractions here is mind-blowing. Throw out your old ideas about the ultimate zoo experience, here you will be invited to get up close and personal, hand-feed and maybe cuddle the wildlife. The five-thousand capacity Crocoseum hosts various crocodile, snake and bird shows, whilst the African Safari exhibit replicates the Serengeti complete with zebras, rhinos and giraffes.

Today you can experience the thrilling and action packed wildlife shows and meet many of the 1200 animals across the 100 acres of the world famous Australia Zoo. You'll experience wildlife like nowhere else. There are several walk-through enclosures where you can be up close and personal with the animals, and benefit from Steve's Safari Shuttle hosted by friendly and knowledgeable guides to assist you in your exploration of this incredible sanctuary.

We tour north from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, past the magnificent Glasshouse Mountains and onto Australia Zoo. Steve and Terri Irwin's vision has always been to make Australia Zoo the biggest and best wildlife conservation facility in the entire world, and indeed there is no other zoo like Australia Zoo. Don't miss the slithering, swooping, jaw-snapping action of the Wildlife Warrior Show in the massive Crocoseum stadium. The many major attractions include Queen Street Mall, various markets, The Gabba, ANZAC Square War Memorial, City Botanic Gardens, Roma Street Parkland, Queensland Museum and Sciencentre, Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, The Courier-Mail Piazza, Maritime Museum, Performing Arts Centre, Conservatorium and of course South Bank. Admire the remarkable colonial and modern architecture, including The Ship Inn (built in 1864), The Plough Inn (1885, part of World Expo 88 festivities), South Brisbane Railway Station, The Arbour, The Goodwill Bridge, Performing Arts Centre, State Library, Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) and River Quay.
