We continue to admire new perspectives of Mt. Fuji as we make our way to Narai-juku. Our drive takes us through the breathtaking landscapes of the South Alps and the resplendent Kiso Valley, where the beauty of Japan's countryside unfolds in all its glory. Arriving at Narai-juku, we step back in time to the Edo period. This exquisitely preserved historic post town along the Nakasendo route exudes an old-world charm that whisks us away to a bygone era. Late this afternoon, we arrive in the charming city of Kanazawa, where the evening is yours to unwind and explore this intriguing city at your own pace. You may choose to soak up the evening ambiance in the city centre, relax at a luxuriant nearby onsen or indulge in some of the city’s renowned local cuisine. Celebrated for its delectable seafood (especially crab) sourced straight from the Sea of Japan, be sure to try the city’s high quality sushi, opt for a unique dish called "Jibuni," (a stew made with duck, vegetables and wheat gluten) or spoil yourself and sit down to the city’s famed "Kaga Kaiseki," a traditional multi-course meal that showcases seasonal ingredients and the region's fine culinary artistry.

DAY 12 Explore Kanazawa

Today, the wonders of Kanazawa await! A city where tradition and modernity intertwine, Kanazawa enchants with its beautifully preserved samurai and geisha districts, stunning Kenroku-en Garden, and rich cultural heritage – offering a fascinating window into Japan's Edo-period elegance.

This morning, we set off on an adventure through the heart of Kanazawa. Our first stop is Omicho Market, a bustling epicentre of local life. As we wander through its vibrant stalls, take in the sights and sounds of vendors offering the freshest seafood, colourful produce and unique local delicacies. This is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the city’s lively atmosphere and perhaps sample a few treats along the way. Next, we make our way to the tranquil Kenroku-en Garden, one of Japan’s most celebrated gardens. Here, nature is meticulously crafted into a living masterpiece. As we stroll through its winding paths, admire the harmonious blend of water features, ancient trees and carefully arranged stones, each element contributing to the garden’s timeless beauty. Whether it’s the delicate blossoms of spring, the lush greenery of summer or the fiery hues of autumn, Kenroku-en offers a captivating experience in every season.

Our journey then takes us to the historic Nagamachi district, where the spirit of the samurai era is still very much alive. We delight in a walking tour through the narrow, cobblestone streets where you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to the past. DAY 13 Kanazawa to Kurobe to Nagano (Japanese Alps)

Today, prepare to be swept away by the dramatic Japanese Alps. Meet the iconic Snow Monkey (between Dec–Apr) or ride the thrilling Kurobe Gorge Railway in the warmer months.

During the colder months the celebrated Snow Monkeys can be seen soaking in the natural hot springs to keep warm. The monkeys bathing in the steamy, snow-covered hot springs is the iconic image of winter in Japan. We visit this remarkable place during the colder months (1 December to 18 April).

During the warmer months (19 April to 30 November) we experience the thrill of a rustic open air rail journey to Kurobe Gorge – one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Nestled in the heart of the Japanese Alps, Kurobe enchants with its dramatic cliffs, deep ravines and vibrant seasonal colours. We embark on a journey that will take us deep into the heart of Japan's rugged and remarkable landscapes. Our destination is Unazuki, a quaint mountain town that serves as the gateway to the stunning Kurobe Gorge. Upon arrival, you'll be captivated by the pristine beauty of the surrounding mountains and the crisp, refreshing air. This is a place where nature reigns supreme, offering a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Feel a rush of exhilaration as we step aboard the historic Kurobe Gorge Railway, an enchanting open air train that winds its way through the narrow passes of Japan's only V-shaped gorge, offering glimpses of cascading waterfalls, dense forests and secluded hot springs. As this rustic train winds its way along the narrow tracks, you'll be treated to a realm of untouched beauty and striking landscapes. Steep, verdant cliffs rise above the emerald waters of the Kurobe River, creating a magnificent panorama that feels almost otherworldly. In every season, Kurobe Gorge reveals a different facet of its natural splendour. It's a journey that feels like stepping into a postcard, where every turn reveals a new and stunning vista.

Upon reaching Kuronagi, we take a short walk through the serene wilderness, leading us to the hidden gem of Kuronagi Onsen. We reboard our coach to make our way to Unazuki and journey onwards to Nagano. As we travel through the scenic countryside, the anticipation builds for the vibrant energy of Nagano city. Upon arrival, the evening is yours to explore at your own pace. Nagano, with its trendy boutiques, diverse restaurants, and lively bars, invites you to discover its modern charms. DAY 14 Nagano to Tokyo via Bullet Train

This morning we step into the ethereal world of Zenko-ji, Nagano’s most revered temple. Dating back to the 7th century, this Buddhist masterpiece stands as a timeless symbol of spiritual devotion and cultural heritage. The temple's main hall, with its intricate wooden architecture and otherworldly atmosphere, houses a hidden statue of Buddha believed to be the first ever brought to Japan. Surrounding the temple, lush gardens and pathways create a peaceful sanctuary, inviting contemplation and connection to Japan's religious traditions. As we walk through the ancient temple grounds, the air is filled with the scent of incense and the quiet whispers of centuries-old prayers. Next, feel the anticipation build as we step aboard a futuristic Japanese shinkansen bullet train bound for Tokyo! Perhaps return to the historic district of Asakusa, experience the experimental architecture in Ginza, the almost 300-feet high Ao Building or stroll along the Sumida River for a panoramic view of the wonders of Tokyo.
