DAY 13 Explore Orkney Islands (Kirkwall, Scotland)

There’s a magic to the Scottish Orkney Islands that you begin to feel as soon as you step ashore. With its beautiful otherworldly landscapes, ancient standing stones and prehistoric villages, the Orkney Islands are magnificently unique and fiercely independent. The archipelago’s bustling main port town of Kirkwall dates back to the 11th century, its strong Viking heritage is still felt today amidst its narrow, twisting wynds and atmospheric paved streets - lined with everything from cathedrals to whiskey breweries. For an Orcadian, the Mainland means the largest island in Orkney rather than the rest of Scotland, and their history is inextricably linked with Scandinavia.

The Ancient Norse town, Kirkwall is the largest town in the Orkneys. Divided into two main focal points: the old harbour and the flagstoned main street - which changes its name four times as it twists its way from the harbour past the world-renowned cathedral. Kirkwall’s red sandstone cathedral commenced being built in 1137 and is without a doubt the finest medieval building in the north of Scotland - standing at the very heart of Kirkwall, St Magnus Cathedral is the town’s most compelling sight. To the south of the cathedral are the remains of the Bishop’s Palace, residence of the Bishop of Orkney since the twelfth century.

Perhaps step back more than 5000 years in time to the earliest henge monument in the British Isles at the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. The four enormous Stones of Stenness are all that remain of a great stone circle that originally held 12 stones on an ancient ceremonial and ritual site - the focus of the interior - a large hearth. Inhabited before the Egyptian Pyramids and Stone Henge were built - the site presents an extraordinary image of life around 5,000 years ago. Today discover the romance of Paris or the history and beauty of the Normandy region. France ignites images of mesmerising fields of endless lavender, sparkling beaches and rolling vineyard clad hillsides winding their way amongst world renowned cityscapes and snow dusted alpine villages. Here, a unique style of luxury encompasses cathedral crowned cities and quaint cobblestone villages alike, as champagne flutes clink in ancient cellars, monuments line the boulevards and iconic artwork seduces enamoured travellers the country over.

Perhaps visit Paris to immerse yourself in the dreamy romance of this iconic city. There is always so much to experience in this radiant capital - monument-lined boulevards, museums, classical bistros and boutiques are complemented by a new wave of hip urban culture. The River Seine flows through the heart of the city, its banks peppered with enticing book sellers and irresistible market stalls. Be swept away by the elegance and grandeur of Paris - the special splendour of the Champs-Élysées – known as "the most beautiful avenue in the world" and the phenomenal Eiffel Tower. Relish your time here to explore the area around Place de la Concorde and choose your favourite French Café to indulge in a glorious array of seductive French cuisine.

Maybe uncover the streets of Le Havre - a world heritage protected love letter to modernism, this city optimises France’s post war energy and optimism - rebuilt after WWII, its striking facades designed by visionary architect Auguste Perret are spectacular. Perhaps wander the elegant streets of this historic port city, treat yourself with a visit to the Andre Malraux Museum, with its world-class collection that includes works of well-known impressionists’ painters such as Dufy, Monet, Renoir, Bonnard, Gauguin and Sisley or simply relax and sink your toes into one of the cities long and beautiful beaches. Le Havre translates to ‘the harbour’ and reflects the status of this maritime city which also boasts the oldest sailing club in France.

Perhaps step back in time to absorb the abundant history on display in Rouen – considered to be the historical capital of Normandy. See the so-called Gros Horloge - an astronomical clock from the 16th century, the Roman Catholic Rouen Cathedral and the "Place du Vieux Marché", the site where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake, at the centre of which stands the modern Church of Saint Joan of Arc. Possibly join the pilgrimage across the glorious Normandy countryside to Mont Saint Michel - where Archangel Michael appeared to the bishop of Avranches in the early VIII century.
